Turner J.R. Project Manager Today, January 2006, Vol. 18 No. 1, Start Page: 13, No. of pages: 3

Purpose – To explore governance at the level of programme and portfolio management. Design/methodology/approach – Gives detailed definitions of programmes and portfolios, outlining the benefits that can be gained from establishing and managing a portfolio of projects which share a common resource pool. Suggests essential steps in governing the investment portfolio, describes how to share resources between the individual projects in a portfolio of individual projects, and examines the roles required to manage the investment portfolio and the large projects. Looks at two particular issues in the governance of project portfolios: managing the interfaces between projects and sharing resources between them. Considers issues of programme governance associated with the programme management lifecycle and the governance roles.
