www.hp.com

We include this site particularly because it came top of BtoB Magazine’s best 100 web sites – with a nearly 98 percent approval rating. Certainly the design is nice and modern and the site is customer-friendly although it is slower to load some sections than you might expect from a cutting-edge technology producer. Interestingly, the American parent site is more appealing than its UK or European counterparts with a very nice rolling news flash introduction on the home page.

Not as great as the hype suggests – but a good example of how a customer focused site should operate with easy e-commerce facilities.

Corporate banker

www.morganstanley.com

Another nicely designed site with a good corporate section on investment, securities and research. We were not quite sure what the strangely named “education”section would be about but it is a very handy guide to the intricacies of money and finance with a literate and straightforward path through today’s financial jargon. Worth a visit.

The business of America…

http://money.cnn.com

Keep abreast of business news in the USA with this excellent site. A random trawl last month revealed headline stories on Wal-Mart, Exxon/Mobil, Microsoft,Ford and General Motors … and, of course, Enron. Several good online versions of magazines such as Fortune and Money give the site added clout. Nicely designed, too. There is a good section on “foreign”business news and a sweet page listing “101 dumbest business blunders”.

Answering business questions

www.axi.ca

“What is the difference in an organisation between ‘mission’and ‘vision’? There are consultants aplenty who are trained to use one or the other words and justify neither.” “What makes a successful voluntary organisation? Voluntary organisations stand or fall, not on the basis of their funding, their organisation, or their worthiness of purpose but on the sincerity of volunteers.” “Does your Website provide you with a justifiable return on investment?” These are a selection of questions and answers to be found on the AXI web site. AXI is a consultancy service that delivers a wide range of consulting and outsourcing services to meet the needs of associations and non-profit organisations across Canada. Whether you are based in North America or not, there are some excellent articles and papers on this user-friendly site.

Blog on

www.Samizdata.net.blog

As promised, we continue our series of recommended business blogs. This site is “a blog for people with a critically rational individualist perspective”.(Samizdata, derived from Samizdat/n. a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR). Enjoy (but do beware libertarian ideology sneaking up on you).

And finally

A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow, and asked him, “Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?”The crow answered: “Sure, why not.” So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

The moral of the story is: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.
