Electronic ticketing in air transport – commercial strategies and consequences
Abeyratne R. Journal of World Trade, December 2005, Vol. 39 No. 6, Start Page: 1095, No of Pages: 24
Purpose – To examine the e-commerce environment related to e-ticketing for air travel. Design/methodology/approach – Explains the e-ticket and its ability to circumvent expensive bilateral arrangements by the use of a hub. Notes the issues of definitions arising from the UN Draft Convention on the Use of Electronic Communications in International Contracts, which excludes personal travel. Includes cyber contracts, the time and place of contracts, and issues of jurisdiction. Considers cyber society and cyber space, and the notion of delivery of a ticket. Findings – Finds that the Montreal Convention of 1999 relaxes the requirements on the sale of airline tickets. However, focuses on the unresolved question of the jurisdiction for any dispute over an e-ticket. Practical implications – Calls for generally accepted principles, set and agreed by a public body as supervisor. Originality/value – Addresses an interesting question of liability, which needs further development.ISSN:1011-6702Reference: 35AC996
