Purpose – To look, very briefly, at the question of whether the human resources (HR) function is truly attuned to its organization’s goals, referring to a survey (“HR Strategy Survey”) carried out by “Personnel Today” in association with Richmond Events. Design/methodology/approach– Notes that every HR practitioner is now aware of the need for HR to be aligned with business strategy if it is to be core function in the organization. Reports that, despite this awareness, the survey revealed that more than one-third of HR managers and staff interviewed felt they were not close enough to the business to help the organization achieve its goals. Comments on other findings of the survey, for example, the number of organizations that have board-level HR representation, the average amount of time spent on administration versus strategy, which HR activities are perceived to be the most strategic, and whether HR departments in general feel that they add value to the organization. Provides a number of quotes from a variety of HR directors on whether and how HR can be strategic. Originality/value – Offers a snapshot of HR’s strategic role in a small number of UK organizations.ISSN:0959-5848Reference: 35AP252
