This study, uniquely employing a bibliometric approach, aims to fill this gap by identifying the intellectual foundations and key publications shaping DL research.
A bibliometric analysis using Reference Publication Year Spectroscopy (RPYS) was conducted on 485 DL-related publications indexed in Web of Science. CRExplorer software processed citation data, clustered reference variations, and analyzed citation patterns.
Seventeen highly cited references were identified as pivotal to DL’s conceptualization. Early research on transformational leadership, adaptive structuration theory, and virtual teams laid the foundation for DL. Recent studies emphasize its impact on innovation, performance, and employee well-being. The findings reveal a significant shift from microlevel leader–follower interactions to broader strategic perspectives, providing enlightening insights for the audience.
This study focuses on Web of Science-indexed publications, potentially excluding relevant contributions from other databases. Future research should explore DL’s practical applications across industries.
Understanding DL’s intellectual foundations is not just informative, but it also empowers leaders to develop competencies for digital transformation, informing leadership training and policy frameworks. This practical application of the research makes the audience feel capable and ready to face the challenges of digital transformation.
DL, by fostering inclusive organizations, enhancing digital literacy, and ensuring ethical and socially responsible digital transformation, can bring about positive social changes.
