Lead-free visual inspection guidelines available

Keywords NPL, Inspection, Publication, Solder joints

The National Physical Laboratory has further developed its CD-ROM based guide to inspecting surface mount solder joints, to cover lead-free assemblies. This CD-ROM incorporates over 200 images of both tin/lead and lead-free solder joints.

The package uses a unique blend of three different types of solder joint image to assist the user in identifying defects. Photographs of joints are linked to both dimensioned drawings and 3D rendered images. Examples of both tin/lead and lead joints are given in five joint categories; insufficient, minimum acceptable, preferred, maximum acceptable and excessive. Chip component,gull-wing, j-lead, MELF and tantalum joint types are covered.

It is thought that this CD-ROM is the first of its kind in the world to feature lead-free solder joints. The price of the CD-ROM is £99 + VAT.
