"Fatigue crack growth behaviour of lead-containing and lead-free solders"

which appeared in Soldering & Surface Mount Technology, Vol. 14 No. 3, 2002

Yoshiharu Mutoh was born in Fukuoka, Japan in 1948. He graduated from Osaka University and obtained his Dr of Engineering degree from the same university in 1976. He joined Nagaoka University of Technology in 1978, where he is currently a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He was also a research associate at the University of Connecticut (USA) during 1979-1980 and a visiting professor at the University of Nottingham in 1986. Professor Mutoh's research interests include fracture mechanics, fracture and fatigue of ceramics and intermetallics and joining mechanics. He has published over 200 technical papers in these areas. He is Chairman of Materials and Processing Division, Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Zhao is currently working as an assistant professor at the Department of Material Science and Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian City, Liaoning Province, People's Republic of China. He received his PhD degree on the topic "Fatigue crack growth behavior in solder materials" in 2001, from Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan. He obtained his Master and Bachelor's degree in Dalian University of Technology, People's Republic of China. His research interests are microstructural characteristics and mechanical behavior of advanced materials, risk evaluation of industrial equipments.

Yukio Miyashita was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1971. He graduated from Nagaoka University of Technology and obtained his Dr of Engineering degree from the same university in 1998. He was Research Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science during 1995-1998. He was also a guest researcher at Lulea University of Technology, Sweden during 1996-1997. He is a research associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Nagaoka University of Technology. Research field of Dr Miyashita is fracture mechanics, high temperature fatigue of ceramics, fatigue of magnesium alloy and welding of dissimilar metals. He obtained JSME (Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers) Young Engineers Award at 2001. (Title of the awarded research work is "Fatigue crack growth behavior of structural ceramics".)

Chaosuan Kanchanomai received the B.Eng. degree in Industrial Engineering from Kasetsart University, Thailand, in 1991, the MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles,CA, in 1995, and the D.Eng. in Materials Science from Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan in 2002. Currently, he is a researcher and lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Thammasat University, Thailand. His research interests include fatigue failure, mixed-mode fatigue crack growth,creep crack growth, and time-dependent fracture mechanics for high temperature materials, e.g. lead-free solders and lead-containing solders, and materials in biomechanics, e.g. fixation plate for fractured-femoral bone.
