Hutchins grant accepting applicants
The Surface Mount Technology Association is now accepting applications for the Hutchins Educational Grant. This grant is awarded to a graduate-level student working on thesis research in electronics packaging or a related field. Given in memory of past SMTA president and distinguished industry colleague Dr Charles Hutchins, it is intended to encourage graduate students to pursue careers in the electronics industry by developing closer ties between graduate student research and the needs of the electronics industry. The grant is co-sponsored by Circuits Assembly magazine.
The $5,000 grant is for the purchase of technical books and research materials, for participation in conferences related to technical packaging and, if required, for living expenses.
To be considered for this award, students must submit a one-page abstract of their thesis research and complete an entry form available from the SMTA (+1 612-920-7682, smta@smta.org Abstracts and entry forms must be received by March 1, 1999.
A grant committee will review all qualified award applications and present their recommendation to the SMTA board of directors.
The 1998 recipient was Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA) graduate student Daniel Lewis, for his project entitled "Solidification of ternary solder alloys". The grant was awarded at the SMTA Annual Meeting during Surface Mount International in San Jose, California.
