NPL receives research and development award

The Electronics Interconnection Group of the National Physical Laboratory was recently selected to receive the Oxford Guardian's 1999 Research and Development Award.

The award aims to recognise the outstanding work undertaken by the group in the research of issues relating to the electronics industry, highlighting in particular the recent project work associated with the development and circulation of data regarding lead-free technology for soldering within UK electronics.

Dr Colin Lea OBE, Head of Materials Centre at NPL, accepted the award on behalf of his team (Plate 3). Colin particularly thanked Dr Chris Hunt (second left) and Dr Brian Richards (right), for their efforts in producing the DTI commissioned "Report on the current status of lead-free soldering".
