NPL presents paper at IPC Conference in Miami

Keywords: National Physical Laboratory

Dr Chris Hunt, from The National Physical Laboratory, was invited to present a paper covering the work carried out on palladium and palladium gold finishes,at the recent IPC Miami Conference. Amongst the conclusions is that the overall solderability and assembly yield of these coatings were not as good as the benchmark tin/lead finish.

Significantly these palladium finished coatings' performances were adversely affected when using lead-free solders. The work has shown that there are small benefits of applying a gold flash to the palladium finish. NPL in a current project are looking at the performance of electroplated lead-free tin alloys including pure tin. This work includes looking at the whiskering propensity.
