This case explores the ethical dilemma Larry Curley, Director of the Laguna Rainbow Elder Care Center, faced when a resident passed away. The cultural practices of the Pueblo, Zuni, Hopi and Jicarilla Apache tribes believed that leaving the bed vacant for four days after death was essential to upholding cultural practices, leading to financial implications for the center. The case highlights the tension between respecting cultural beliefs and maintaining financial stability, as well as the negotiations with the New Mexico State Medicare office for reimbursement.
