Presents the philosophy of TQM and operational elements which allow its application in a manufacturing environment. Describes eight such elements including management leadership, employee involvement, customer focus, fact‐based decision making, continuous improvement, benchmarking,responsibility for quality at the source, and quality function deployment. These elements are then positioned in an evolutionary model for a step‐by‐step introduction of TQM into a manufacturing environment. Finally, discusses some of the expected benefits with improvement examples from the factory where the author is employed.
