Purpose

New quality productivity (NPRO) gives new impetus to businesses to seek higher value-added, fully digitalized, and environmentally friendly operational patterns. With the Asia-Pacific region as a focal point of corporate management, this paper explores the impact of NPRO on sustainable performance (SP). It provides a new strategic framework to assist regional firms to surmount the constraints of traditional operating models and promote sustainable development.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is based on panel data of Chinese listed companies between 2015 and 2023. The effects of NPRO on SP of enterprises are studied using econometric models, and the mediating role of dynamic capability (DC) and the moderating role of environmental uncertainty (EU) are highlighted. In order to guarantee the strength and stability of the results, robustness tests, endogeneity tests, and mechanism tests are also performed.

Findings

NPRO has a significant and positive effect on enterprise SP, and DC is a partial mediator of the relationship. In addition, EU negatively moderates the relationship between DC and SP. These results logically explain the transmission mechanisms and contextual boundary conditions under which NPRO improves enterprise SP, thus contributing to the theoretical framework of NPRO and sustainable corporate management.

Originality/value

This paper constructs a moderated mediation model. Within the context of an ever-changing and volatile market, the managers in the Asia-Pacific region can use the emergence of NPRO to enhance the organizational DC, be more responsive to the external environmental changes, and create long-term and sustainable competitive advantages.
