The importance attached to sustainability was further indicated when the United Nations (UN) announced sustainable development goals (SDGs) in 2015. The goals underpin the agenda for action on people, planet and prosperity.

For certain industries, achieving a more sustainable future is particularly challenging. Textile and apparel (T&A) is one such example. The multiple members in its global supply chain ensure it is notoriously complex.

To its credit, the sector has made some progress in addressing the so-called triple bottom line. But growing emphasis on social and environmental issues as well as economic ones hasn't yet led to sustainability being attained....
