Corrosion is a big problem in steel structures, especially in coastal areas. To avoid corrosion, steel structures have to be painted at periodic intervals, thus increasing their life cycle cost. Due to these factors, many owners and architects do not specify steel space frames. To solve this problem, stainless steel is being increasingly used. This paper describes India's first stainless steel space frame roof. This double layer grid roof was erected at Hissar, Haryana, and has a saucer shape in the longitudinal direction. This roof of size l lm x 18m is supported by two circular reinforced concrete columns of 500mm diameter. The roof was modeled as a space truss and analysed using STAAD III program. It was fabricated and erected using MERO type joints in just 8 weeks.
