Although this conference as a whole has been largely

directed towards the purpose and effectiveness of

geotechnical instrumentation there are some papers which

would be dealing mainly with the design and functioning of

an instrument itself. Four papers fell clearly into this

category although there are borderline cases in other

sessions.

Papers 41 (Instruments for measuring the effective stresses

acting on a pile jacked into overconsolidated clay, A.J.

Bond & R.J. Jardine) and 45 (A transducer for measuring

normal and shear stresses, G.O. Rowlands, R. Delpak & S.N.

Wersching) deal with pressure measuring devices for use in
