Purpose – To contend that a multi-disciplinary and tailored approach to learning can turn knowledge into wisdom. Design/methodology/approach –Outlines research into the way we learn to understand how to get the most out of professional development. Findings – The core learning theories are either teacher-based (behaviorist theory) or learner-based (constructivist theory). Suggests that when studying away from the classroom, it is often best to enforce some rules, just as a teacher might. States that mentoring is useful as it steers people but allows them to build, remarking that learning without interaction and guidance is deeply problematic. Adds that experiential learning in continuous professional development can be beneficial while structured activities can help by involving people actively. Concludes that a flexible,multi-disciplinary and tailored approach to learning is better than a one-size-fits-all, education by diktat, program. Originality/value –Argues that wisdom and knowledge are not the same but both can prove helpful.ISSN: 0954-1543Reference: 35AJ495
