Coming of age (training)

Sloman M.Training Journal Apr 2006, Start page: 31, No. of pages: 4

Purpose – considers how the role of trainers has changed in the UK and sets out their current role in developing the skills needed by organizations. Design/methodology/approach – draws on Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development research to discuss the role of trainers and illustrates it by presenting short case studies. Findings – argues that the old model of training, which was based on identifying employees’ training needs, designing and delivering the required training, and evaluating its impact, needs to change. Contends that training should no longer be an isolated event that is undertaken by employees but needs to be linked to other organizational processes to create a system for learning. Underlines that the learning required by organizations will not arise naturally during everyday processes but requires an intervention from trainers which can also be validated. Sees this as the new role of trainers. Originality/value – explains the new role being demanded of trainers.Reference: 35AL088ISSN: 1465-6523
