Counting the value of learning

Purpose – discusses the contribution that training and development makes to the UK economy and to individual organizations. Describes a framework which is being developed that can be used to establish the value of human capital to an organization. Design/methodology/approach – summarizes the findings of research carried out by the Sector Skills Development Agency with partners, such as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, to establish the contribution that training and development has made to the UK economy. Also describes research that has been carried out by Bassi in the USA and Tamkin in the UK to establish the contribution that training and development makes to organizational performance. Sets out the framework that has been developed by Tamkin, which can be used to analyse the contribution that training and development makes to an organization. Findings – underlines the need for a coherent and consistent framework and a set of metrics, which can understand and demonstrate the contribution that training makes to organizational performance.
