Purpose – Sets out the case in favour of flexible working, underlining the different approaches to flexible working can take. Profiles four UK companies that have introduced flexible working successfully. Design/methodology/approach – Quotes the Department of Trade and Industry on the advantages employers can gain from offering flexible working but counters this by quoting a representative of the Federation of Small Businesses on the difficulties that small firms can face. Profiles how the retail chain Mothercare, Bull Information Systems, Trinity (the authority responsible for the UK’s lighthouses) and Bright Kids (a small nursery group) have developed flexible working for their employees and how they have made it work. Findings – Overall, paints a positive picture of flexible working in the four profiles, highlighting the advantages that the companies have gained.
