Reports the results of a project to determine the extent to which the 5S workplace organization and quality management technique, an approach that has been found to be extremely successful in the industrial setting, can be made to be equally effective in the public service setting. Describes how 5S was applied to the Department of Public Works in Collierville, Tennessee, to determine if the technique could show the same benefits as in factory conditions. Reveals that general productivity was seen to show immediate improvement after the application of 5S, largely determined through discussions with division supervisors and workers.ISSN: 1542-894XReference: 40AE796
