Reports that some US employees are fighting back against rudeness in the workplace by forming groups to promote good manners. Underlines that this is a serious matter, arguing that low productivity and stress is caused by organizational cultures that allow employees to be rude to and demean their colleagues. Summarizes research that has looked at this problem and identified it as being widespread in the USA. Gives examples of poor behaviour in work situations and discusses why such incidents happen. Points out that rudeness and incivility can amount to bullying. Advises on how to develop a civil workplace, pointing to initiatives set up in a number of workplaces, including the Veterans Health Administration, and indicates the benefits gained by the organizations.
