For most of his career, he was Principal of a number of Primary schools in various part of Queensland. In 1969, he was appointed Regional Director for the North West of Queensland, an area that extended from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the South Australian border. In size, it was three times that of the British Isles. From there he became Regional Director of the Northern Region, which extends from Prosperpine to Thursday Island, the second largest region in size in the State. In 1975 he became Director of Primary Education.
