The process of designing, developing and implementing a computer‐based employee skills inventory system within the Ford Motor Company is described. Important factors influencing the success of such a system are focused on from the perspective of an industrial/organisational psychologist. It is argued that the key to successful consultation is the adoption of a collaborative style that encourages and supports the active involvement of management and employees.
