Microelectronic Modules Corp. acquires Switch Power, Inc.

Keywords MMC, Switch Power, Acquisition

Microelectronic Modules Corporation (MMC) has acquired Switch Power, Inc. (SPI). The purchase caps a two-year licensing agreement under which MMC has developed its board-level HDLV(high density low voltage) DC/DC converters incorporating SPI's patented Vcontrol architecture. Both firms are privately held; financial terms were not disclosed.

Formerly a division of North American Philips Corporation, MMC was incorporated independently in 1993. Headquartered in New Berlin, Wisconsin, MMC is an ISO 9001-certified manufacturer of custom electronic subassemblies and proprietary products utilizing thick-film and/or advanced packaging technologies, developed for the communications, computer, automotive, industrial control, medical and instrumentation industries. SPI, incorporated in 1995 and headquartered in Campbell, CA, develops DC power supply technology for the computer and communication industries. Facilities in both locations will be maintained, with SPI continuing to operate independently as a subsidiary.

In a joint statement,president/CEO Ken Hammer of MMC and president Bill Pelletier of SPI foresee a synergistic business relationship in which SPI will concentrate on developing innovative power supply solutions, intensifying its pursuit of new and patentable technologies, and providing technical sales support to the MMC sales force, while MMC will focus on electronic package design, manufacturing, quality assurance, sales and administrative support.

By joining forces in this fashion, MMC anticipates broader emphasis on bringing SPI patents to market in a greater variety of products at a faster rate. Both firms view this combination as a strategic move toward sharing a more competitive position in the rapidly growing DC power module industry.
