Power capacitors: power factor correction on site with PoleCap
Power capacitors: power factor correction on site with PoleCap
Keywords: Capacitors
EPCOS has developed a new series of low-voltage capacitors for power factor correction to meet the demands of electricity suppliers. These new PoleCap capacitors can be directly mounted on poles or pylons for aerial cables.
Efficient power factor correction can thus be provided in the immediate vicinity of mainly private and agricultural loads in thinly populated rural areas. Current and voltage losses are thus reduced and the stability of power grids increased because harmonics are suppressed close to loads.
Outdoor mounting makes special demands on the capacitors. They must be watertight and dustproof (protection type IP54) as well as highly resistant to vibration and shock. The capacitors must also withstand ultraviolet radiation and adverse weather conditions. Increased heating caused by direct sunlight must not impair operation. Inaccessibility of the capacitors also calls for remote display of the condition of the overpressure disconnector. All these demands are satisfied by the new PoleCap capacitors of series B25667P*. These rugged capacitors are the result of consistent ongoing development of the tried and tested PhaseCap® series for power factor correction.
The new capacitors are available for rated voltages of 400, 440 and 525 V at 50 and 60 Hz. Depending on type, reactive powers from 5 to 30 kvar can be corrected. The ordering number of the product profile for the PoleCap series is EPC:26015-7600.
