Folk Music on Disc: The Alan Lomax Collection

The Lomax Collection on Rounder (see RR 98/342 and passim) has become almost an avalanche. Deep River comprises four CDs from a rich treasury. When John and Alan Lomax first set out to document this strand of US folk music, they found the best known singers had made commercial recordings that led to a feedback into the original repertoire. The Lomaxes took the situation head‐on, reporting it as it was on the ground, open to the possibility that the interaction that had caused the feedback could lead to new, extra riches.
