This comprehensive history of English country furniture was first published by Barrie and Jenkins in 1992 and was the result of an abiding curiosity in history nurtured by the author’s mother, combined with an interest in old furniture which developed while he was growing up in Canada, where he was born. A second edition was soon called for but, as Knell remarks in the acknowledgements to this new edition, it has taken longer to produce than was originally envisaged.
