A line from the Hymn of the Jewish Partisans reads “Our steps will be like drums proclaiming we are here”. The “we” are “the survivors of the Holocaust, those who wrote, those who told, and those who remembered and were silent” – the dedication to this dictionary. Jill Vexler, who wrote about a woman's life in the Nazi labour camps, said she was convinced “that the only way to begin to understand the Holocaust is to listen to the stories of individuals”: this is what this book is all about.
