A number of points of clarification are immediately called for in reviewing this title. Firstly, although published by John Hopkins University Press in the United States, the author is British and the book has a primarily, though by no means exclusively, UK focus. Secondly, although the title Dow's Dictionary of Railway Quotations might give the impression of a railway reference stalwart reappearing in a new edition, this is an entirely new publication and, as far as this reviewer is aware, the first devoted entirely to quotations relating to railways.
