In his introduction author Marshall D. Wright states that he intends this book to stand next to titles produced for the popular Sports Encyclopedia series (originally published by Grosset and Dunlap and later by St Martin's), essential sports references seeking to supply complete statistics for major league athletics. While hockey has not been treated in the Sports Encyclopedia series, Wright does acknowledge previous reference works devoted to the sport in general, and to the National Hockey League (NHL) in particular.
