Purpose – To explore governance at the level of program and portfolio management. Design/methodology/approach – Gives detailed definitions of programs and portfolios, outlining the benefits that can be gained from establishing and managing a portfolio of projects that share a common resource pool. Suggests essential steps in governing the investment portfolio, describes how to share resources between the individual projects in a portfolio of individual projects, and examines the roles required to manage the investment portfolio and the large projects. Looks at two particular issues in the governance of project portfolios: managing the interfaces between projects and sharing resources between them. Considers issues of program governance associated with the program management lifecycle and the governance roles. Originality/value – Continues a series on the building of enterprise project management capability, with a particular look at connecting projects to corporate strategy within program and portfolio management.ISSN: 1366-6851
