Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the generational literature to identify differences in motivation and values across the different generations in the workplace. This is with a view to providing insight for business leaders and managers to shape their management approach to support a more inclusive culture.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper considers the recent generational literature from 2010 onwards reflecting the impact of millennials entering the workplace from the 2000s and Generation Z from mid-2010s who now make a significant proportion of the workforce shaping workplace trends and dynamics.

Findings

This paper identifies numerous examples of generational differences between younger and older workers motivations and values in the workplace highlight the need for further research into management best practice to focus on developing an inclusive culture for all generations to thrive.

Originality/value

The Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z currently work side by side in the workplace, so understanding differences between these generations is critical to establishing an inclusive culture where all generations can thrive.
