Purpose

As employees in today's society attempt to find a balance between work and family responsibilites, conflicts between the two continue to be a struggle. This paper aims to review two theories- work/family border theory and work/family enrichment theory- focusing on the challenges employees face trying to accomplish balance in a daily routine.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper synthesizes findings from existing literature.

Findings

While many employees continue to try to find a balance between work and family and avoid work-family conflict, many continue to place boundaries and not allow for negative impacts between their home and work environments. Many employees continue to struggle to find a daily routine that works for all living in the same household.

Practical implications

Developing a way to enrich the lives of all involved takes time and patience, as there has to be a balance involved while maintaining one’s ability to manage borders, roles and enrichment of their own lives, especially in today’s environment. By employees embracing the decision to find a balance of borders and roles that works for them, they can experience positive impacts in their lives.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the growing body of literature by providing strategies for enriching the lives of all involved while managing bordersand roles. Ensuring these are being properly managed at work and home, employees can create a smooth transition between these, reducing conflict and enhancing employee well-being.
