A precision electronic test probe with a subminiature tip of only 0.018in diameter, a fraction of the size of conventional probe tips, has been introduced by Warwick Test Supplies (Plate 10). The model 6342 probe, manufactured by Pomona Electronics, is designed for probing extremely fine pitch IC leads,including TSSOP and SSOP packages. It provides accuracy and accessibility for testing densely populated circuit boards in repair and test laboratory applications.

Being small in outline, the slim design allows access into tight spots without obstructing visual contact within the test point area. The probe's thermoplastic elastomer outer layer provides a comfortable and secure grip.

Many different probe tips are available for nearly any probing situation,including a spring-loaded plunger tip, which allows the tip to "float"while maintaining a constant level of pressure. This "pogo-pin" feature prevents the tip from slipping and damaging other components or circuit board traces. Stainless steel tips for penetrating surface contamination, multi-head tips, and extra long probe tips are also available. If damaged, the tips can easily be replaced.

The probe design is fully compliant with the latest international safety standard, IEC 1010 with Category III, 1,000V overvoltage protection and a maximum current rating of 3A. The probe is also available in Pomona test lead kits designed for specific applications, and can be used with digital multimeters from any of the major manufacturers.
