The article identifies and discusses the criteria by which consumer organisations (in particular the Consumers in the European Community Group) judge the use of food additives: safety, necessity, alternatives,cost, benefits, available information, possible harmful effects, and consumer redress. The author also summarises the issues consumer groups are likely to be concerned with in future: representation, review and enforcement.
