Our multiple experiences come from a vast number of sources (family, friends, television, etc.), and shape how we view our lives and the world around us (Harro, 2000). Schools should be a place for happiness, hope, and healing. Alas, some are filled with despair, degradation, and depression. Although both positive and negative experiences occur in schools, students’ experiences tend to be based on who they are, where they are from, the language they speak, and how much money they may or may not have. This reality speaks to the numerous challenges that are faced by students of color or those who may be at a socio-economic disadvantage. My story is similar; it is one of perceived reality, startling realizations, and renewed hope.
