Purpose – summarizes the findings of a research project run by Training Journal and the Institute for Employment Studies that has looked at the future of learning and development. Design/methodology/approach – sets out a series of scenarios concerning the way that the consumer society might develop, how workers’ expectations will change, the future design of learning and the use that will be made of artificial intelligence. Discusses the implications of these for learning and development. Findings – argues, among other things, that social and informal learning will continue to take the place of formal learning; that the boundaries of work and personal time will continue to become more blurred; that the focus of learning and development will extend beyond skills and knowledge to include the capacities of people to manage their lives, and that learning and development will become more important in the organization than human resource management. Originality/value – forecasts the future of learning and development. ISSN: 1465-6523 Reference:37AK379
