The Centre was established in 1961, under the aegis of the Department of Economics at Manchester University, with the aim of promoting research into problems of business management. It comprises a club of major business firms, whose annual subscriptions, along with other research grants finance the day‐to‐day running of the Centre and the sponsorship of a number of ‘high priority’ research projects. The member firms provide facilities within their own organizations for independent investigations and keep in close contact with the research elements of Manchester Business School.
