LeadScan sensing system makes PMJ's odd-form assembly cells even better

PMJ's HiSAC range of automated odd-form assembly cells has added an exclusive, patent pending LeadScan Sensing System that provides on-the-fly inspection of odd-form, thru-hole components. LeadScan improves odd-form placement accuracy by detecting bent and/or missing leads prior to component insertion, and regardless of the number of leads or the lead shape or profile(Plate 1). The LeadScan Sensing System is a major breakthrough for odd-form assembly, greatly simplifying system set-up, while improving system quality and increasing machine up-time. Rather than using a conventional camera inspection method – which has a limited capability for inspecting leaded components and adds significant cycle time – the LeadScan Sensing System uses a unique scanning technique to inspect each component as it is moved to the placement location. This technique produces a scan of the component leads, allowing the spacing and position of leads to be precisely measured. Defective components are automatically rejected. In addition, LeadScan automatically compensates for any body-to-lead tolerance and inaccuracy in component feeding. The system can also store images of defective components for management analysis and to provide feedback to component supplier.
